Chapter Thirteen

I had no interest in being in church that Sunday. I told Mrs. Bryant that my brother was being buried and I wanted to be alone. If Mrs. Bryant wanted to ask me about my brother, she didn’t make any indication. She always seemed to sense my moods and made to accommodate them at every turn. It was exhausting sometimes, but I appreciated it because I knew it came from a place of tenderness.

I headed to the park after speaking with Jessica to seek out one of Daniel’s neighborhood salesmen. Jessica had provided the details for a deal that was going to happen next weekend, so I needed to contact Daniel. I was not allowed to contact him directly even though I had earned a higher position in the hierarchy. I had to go through one of his many salesmen or talk to him in person at one of Taylor’s parties, which was incredibly irritating.

“Can you call Daniel?” I asked when I spotted Daniel’s regular park salesman.

His stared at me blankly. “Who?”

I rolled my eyes. I’d seen him around more than once. He knew who I was but didn’t like me in the organization any more than Taylor did.

“I’m not in the mood for games.” I pointed to the phone in his hand. “Call the boss.”

He leaned against the fence that encircled the park and smirked. “You’re the bitch trying to make a name for herself.”

I snickered. “And you’re the chump who gets to sit around like a big gorilla.”

His expression darkened, and his dark eyes narrowed at me. “My mom told me never to hit a female. You’re pushing it, bitch.”

“Last time I saw my father he told me I should just kill myself, so I learned a long time ago not to listen to the ramblings of parents.”

He started to say something but pressed his lips together tightly.

“Call Daniel now.”

He scoffed, but dialed Daniel’s number anyway, and then pitched the phone at me. I caught it with ease. It rang twice before Daniel answered.

“What?” His tone was sharp.

“I had two visitors this week,” I replied coolly.

“Congratulations. What do you want?”

I shifted my weight. “I learned some new information.”

“What?”

“Those boys that came to see me today – Kenny and Mango - they were bragging about some new product coming in from Mexico. This product could double profits.”

“I’m not going to risk my business on the word of two idiots. I have my own supplier.”

“Do you? I thought your supplier was snatched in the ambush that killed Roman.” It was a gamble to tell him I knew about that bust, but it was one I needed to make.

“How you know all that?” Daniel questioned.

“Roman told me where he was going that day when I gave him the money.” Daniel fell silent on the other end. “Look, I know where it will be coming in and when. Isn’t it about time we take Leo and his crew completely out of business? They are already looking for weaknesses in your territory.”

Daniel remained silent.
